How high is too high?
Is good enough, good enough?
I certainly have a way of doing things, whether it’s loading the dishwasher or creating a brand. It’s either right or it’s wrong.
When I was a kid, I mowed our lawn. That’s where I learned the job isn’t done until it’s done right. A sincere “Thanks, Dad” is appropriate here.
I also know that I tend to project those same standards onto clients, colleagues, partners, and vendors. Not because I want to be difficult, but because I care about doing the work correctly. Frankly, I’m baffled when that level of care or work ethic isn’t reciprocated.
Throughout my career, I’ve met people who share this mindset, and others who do what’s required and nothing more.
I recently raised this with friends who are well-established in their careers. I heard similar stories. I also heard something that stuck with me. If you are delivering 80 percent of “perfect,” you are already doing more and better than most.
Maybe that’s true.
So I’ve been thinking. Is “good enough” actually good enough? Am I creating unnecessary friction by expecting, or at least striving for, perfection? Or is the honest answer somewhere in between?
I’m curious what you think.
What I do know is this: If you have high expectations for your business and how it’s perceived, and those expectations are not being met, we should chat because I can help.
